Sistah Mo Respect defines herself as composer, presenter, capoeirista, dancehall queen and trumpeter, and is perhaps more mysterious as she does not reveal her real name. We know that she comes from Parada de Lucas, a district in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. There, she grew up with the swing and beats of the berimbau – her first contact with music was through her father, who is capoeira professor and composer.
Through the NGO AfroReggae she started to work in different radio stations and participated in vocal, trumpet and percussion classes. Later she coordinated RedBull Favela Beats which put her in contact with Funk Carioca masters such as Sany Pitbull, Grand Master Raphael and Nino.
During this time, she was also already involved in Rio’s rap scene fighting for her space with strong personality and style. Her songs mix rap with Jamaican rhythms, but the strong and prominent percussion leave no doubt about her Brazilian roots.
